Last weekend, BJJ world champion Rafael Lovato made history. The undefeated MMA fighter (10-0 MMA) dominated and took a decision win over the dangerous veteran Gegard Mousasi in the main event of Belllator London at SSE Arena, Wembley on Saturday.
The fight was dominated in the first two rounds by the American Jiu-Jitsu champion but Mousasi rallied in the 3rd and 4th round. In the last round, Lovato put on a huge performance and smothered Mousasi with his world class Jiu-Jitsu.
It was closed but the the judges gave it 47-47, 48-47, and 48-47 for a majority decision.
Lovato was able to execute his game plan of clinching, getting the takedown and working his Jiu-Jitsu in the first two rounds but Mousasi was able to keep the fight standing in the 3rd and 4th.
Mousasi didn’t take the defeat well at all and went on record accusing Lovato of PED use.
Mousasi said, as translated by Dutch reporter Giovanni Tjin for MMA Junkie:
“I should have won this match even with him using PEDs.”
“I told the commission that it’s clear that he was on PEDs. (The commissioner) gave me a pat on the shoulder and told me that he was going to get tested on fight day and walked away.”
“I did grab him on the shoulder and say, ‘Every time you fight, you ask me to test all the opponents, and I said that to you and your manager. Mousasi knows I tested him, because I was out there taking urine from him. So I don’t know what he’s stating, but both tests came back negative.”
“I want to have fighters that are clean. I’m a clean fighter, so I want my opponent to be clean.”
“Brazilians are known for using PEDs. Americans, too, but especially Brazilians.”
Both Mousasi and Lovato Jr tested negative for PED use after the fight.
